RCM Examinations and Rising Exam Fees
Dear ORMTA Colleagues, Parents & Music Teachers,
The Newmarket and Area Branch of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers’ Association (ORMTA) is concerned about the Royal Conservatory of Music’s rising examination fees.
It is the consensus among many teachers that these very high fees have become a deterrent to continued engagement with the RCM system for many families and teachers.
Currently, the only theory exam below $100.00 is the Preparatory exam, which most students do not write. With the exception of the Introductory Non Piano, and Prep A & B examinations, all remaining levels are above $100.00; from $113.00 for a Grade One exam, to $185.00 for Grade Eight! These rates are very costly, especially for a family with more than one child applying for an examination. As well, vocal and instrumental applicants must also pay for accompanists, which incur an additional cost.
As a branch, we would like the Conservatory to consider maintaining the fees as listed for the 2015/2016 sessions without an increase of fees every year.
We invite you to support this initiative by signing the online petition that accompanies this letter. Please forward any comments or feedback using the form below. We welcome your input and will personally contact the conservatory with our concerns. *Please note that the provincial ORMTA does not endorse this petition.
We do believe in the quality of the examination system, but hope that this will impact RCM’s decision making process when considering the fee schedule.
